Spare paddle

Shorter paddle that fits the length of most front decks

  • Art.no: 10045

Storm paddle is the name most often used for a shorter version of the classic Greenland paddle. The paddle is short, with a short loom. When paddling, you change your grip with every stroke, which minimizes the paddle's wind exposure and keeps your hands warm. This is called the sliding stroke. It may sound tiring but works well in practice.

Most people use this paddle as a spare since it can lie neatly on the foredeck of any sea kayak - ready for use if you get tired. It is also a must for performing a skin-on-frame rescue for those who paddle home built Inuit style kayaks. Here used as an outrigger. For rougher seas, we recommend a normal paddle as a spare paddle.

The wood is very tough and durable in itself. In addition, it has been treated with two layers of our own wax reinforced linseed oil mixture.

The tips, most likely to be worn, are first reinforced mechanically with an inlay of hardwood. The tip is then treated with clear penetrating epoxy and two layers of pigmented epoxy. The pigment acts as protection from UV light.

The finished result is a paddle that will last for years of rough use without noticeable signs of wear.
